Listen to the radio and you can hear the quality of music they play, this is why I say yes the music should be professionally mixed and mastered. Full Sail University I have learned a great deal about mixing and mastering. One thing is it takes a great deal of time to really give your song what it needs to standout like what you hear on the radio. Also it takes someone with experience who knows what they are doing. What the mix does for your music is give it life and character. It's what makes it standout from the rest. When mastering comes into play this is in a sense what makes it louder.
